How to Grow Avocados at Home

Discover how to grow avocados in your own home! Here's an easy method made up of simple steps. Best of all, you don’t need a terrace or indoor patio to grow your own avocados.

Avocados—the delicious fruit we all love—can be grown right at home without any issues. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to do it.

Start by getting an avocado seed. You can simply keep the seed from an avocado you’ve eaten. Make sure to wash it thoroughly to remove any leftover pulp.

Insert three toothpicks into the seed at equal distances and at an angle, forming a kind of tripod. This will allow you to suspend the seed over a glass of water.

Place the seed with the toothpicks facing down into a glass of water so that the bottom half is submerged. Make sure the water covers at least half of the seed.

Put the glass in a warm, sunny spot in your home. Ensure the room temperature is at least 20°C (68°F).

Change the water every two days, always keeping the water level consistent. Don’t let the seed dry out.

After a few weeks, you’ll start to see the seed crack open and a small stem will sprout. This means your seed is germinating.

Once the stem reaches about 15 cm (6 inches) in height, it’s time to transplant it into a pot. Use a pot that’s large enough and has good drainage.

Fill the pot with high-quality potting soil and place the germinated avocado seed in the center, making sure to cover the roots with soil.

Put the pot in a sunny spot and water it regularly, keeping the soil moist but not soggy.

As your avocado tree grows, you may need to move it to a bigger pot or even plant it in your garden if you have the space.

And that’s it! Follow these easy steps and you’ll soon be enjoying your own home-grown avocados. No terrace or indoor patio needed—just a little care and patience. Give it a try and enjoy this rewarding experience!
