Classic French Toast with Butter, Maple Syrup & Fresh Berries

Classic French Toast with Butter, Maple Syrup & Fresh Berries

Ingredients (Serves 2–3)

  • 4 thick slices of brioche or challah bread

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1/2 cup whole milk (or half-and-half for richer taste)

  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 pinch of salt

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for frying)

For topping:

  • Maple syrup

  • Powdered sugar

  • Fresh strawberries

  • Fresh blueberries

  • Fresh raspberries

  • Extra butter (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the custard
In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until fully combined and smooth.

  2. Soak the bread
Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for about 10–15 seconds per side. The bread should absorb the mixture but not become soggy.

  3. Heat the pan
Heat a non-stick skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and let it melt, coating the pan evenly.

  4. Cook the French toast
Place the soaked bread slices into the pan. Cook for 2–3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and slightly crispy on the outside.
Add more butter if needed when flipping.

  5. Serve
Stack the French toast on a plate. Top with a small pat of butter, drizzle generously with maple syrup, and dust lightly with powdered sugar.

  6. Add fresh fruit
Finish with strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries for freshness and color.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use day-old bread for better texture and less sogginess.

  • Keep the heat medium; too high will burn the outside before the inside cooks.

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or orange zest to the custard.

Serving Idea

Serve immediately while warm, paired with coffee or tea. This dish works perfectly for breakfast, brunch, or a cozy weekend treat.
